Unusual Breathing Sounds

My son recently makes a rasping nose when he is not only sleeping but during the day and while eating. It sounds like its coming from behind his nose. He has no cold. Its sounds almost like snoring but not really? Will he grow out of it or do you think it could be something else? I don't know, so I'm going to get it checked out by the doctor. I just thought maybe someone else may have had noticed this in their child too and may know more about it.

My son has been having this too. I know what you mean, it sounds like snoring....but not really. My mom heard it and told me that my little brother had the same thing when he was born. They found out that he had asthma and it was labored breathing. I will be discussing it with my son's doctor at his next appointment on Friday. Hopefully it's nothing to worry about for both of us. I'll let you know what the doc says.

How old is he? Newborns will do this from what my books read. They'll cough and sneeze to clear their airways and it's nothing to worry about. My 3 wk old does this too sometimes. I'd mention it at your next appt.

With my son it's more than just coughing and sneezing. It's a snoring sound, but he just looks like he's trying way to hard to breathe. I'm going to talk to the doc on Friday for sure.

did any of you smoke while pregnant ...i did and my son does this too..but he is healthy no asthma or anything..i think its like a grunting noise..he snorts and grunts as if he is frustrated with trying to communicate...i think its normal...babys all do different things to show they are excited...thats mostly when my son does it!

My son had the same thing, I was so scared, I thought something was very wrong with him, turns out he just had the flu!

I smoked before I knew that I was pregnant. I smoked about 1/2 pack a day until 7 or 8 weeks when I found out.

My son is almost 8 months and he has been doing this for the past 2 weeks. I went to the doctor yesterday and he said he as no cold and a lot of babies do this sound but its too early to tell if he has excess muscle tissue in his nose ca___l to need surgery. As infants grow older their nose air pa__sage gets bigger and wider and breath easier. Hopefully it will. We just have to wait. No I am not a smoker or drink.

I am not a smoker/drinker but my son has that kind of sound when he was newborn . His pediatrician check his lung and there was nothing wrong with it. The problem turned out to be that he is a little bit congested, the doctor said humidifier will helps. My son is 3 mths now, and the problem just disappeared, how old is yr son by the way?
