When To Start Juice

i find it odd that so many of you are willing to do what you think is best regardless of what doctors warn us...juice aside, one of the main reasons we are supposed to hold off feeding our children anything but formula/b___stmilk until later is because their intestines have not completely matured to the point of closing themselves off to potentially harmful substances. In the early months of life, the lining of a baby's intestines is immature adn allows allergens to get through, which sets the infant up for allergies and infections... just an fyi. i'm sure lesley will comment that i read too much, but it is something i love and i don't feel ashamed for it. after all, if she doesn't like to read about parenting issues but instead does what feels right, then why does she bother checking this site? she must like to read too......

I am absolutely for getting advice here and from a doctor, but also to trust my motherly instincts. You will find that over the years and even now, many people and many doctors cannot agree on what is best for baby. All babies and parents are different. What works for one may not work for another. People have been raising babies all different ways thruout the years and for the most part, I am sure that the baby who gets juice at 3mos, the one who gets it at 6 mos and the one who never does, all turn out okay. Advice is just that, but everyone has the right to do what they think is best for their babies.

i never said that motherly instincts cannot be put to work here - of course you should do what you think is best. but when someone in the medical community also raises a CAUTION flag, then any good mother won't just poo poo it off, but read into it and see what's the deal. a lot of things moms did in the past were "just fine" but now that we know more about the developing child - in the womb and out, doesn't it make sense to try to do better than "just fine?" some moms i know smoke while pregnant and around their kids - this has nothing to do with juice, of course - but they said the first kid was okay, the second was okay, so the third will be "just fine" too. sometimes moms need to know a bit more - WHY something can be harmful - and there's nothing wrong with pointing that out.

I just don't understand why so many moms are so eager to to start their babies on juice. It is full of unnessisary calories and contributes to tooth decay. Don't get me wrong I am not anti juice but why get them hooked on juice so early? Plenty of time for that later just give them the nutrition they need now w/ formula or b___stmilk. It's all they need.

I would say something to your MIL, not just because it is juice but because YOU are mom & she should have asked if it was O.K. before giving it. Regardless of if your son likes it/reacts to it,etc, etc, you do not want your MIL to think she can make the "mother" decisions for your son. Trust me, I have a MIL that has done just that with my stepson & I intend to nip it firmly in the bud with this baby. Everyone should ALWAYS ask mom or dad if it's o.k. to give a child something unless they are 100% sure that the child is allowed to have it.

To Megan- Who can keep up with all of the medical "cautions". I swear I feel like something new comes out every week. I have a degree in Child Development and Education, but I know half of the stuff that I learned from a textbook is not what really happens in real life. Also, the guidelines that are in place for babiesin the US are so different in other countries. My husband is from Jamaica and it is not uncommon to give a two month old porridge and/or diluted juice. They do not have a high obesity rate and the children little intestines handle it just fine. And to Jen, infant juice is not filled with "unneccessary" calories nor does it lead to tooth decay. Tooth decay in infants is caused when parents let their child fall asleep with the bottle or sippy cup in their mouths. It does not matter if it is juice or milk, the same result can happen.

i have nothing wrong with 100% apple or orange juice. their is no sugar ADDED only the one from the fruit. its a portion of their needed fruit/veggi. of course their is alot of "fake"orange appe/fruit punch juice. that is only 25-50%real...iam totally against those to be givin daily on regular basis, or that powder juice and koolaid.

I was just really a___l when it came to give my first born anything so I did what the Dr. told me to do which was not start until after his first birthday but that is just me. Now I give my son juice but don't over do it. I'm certainly not afraid of a little sugar I just know that too much of anything isn't good for you.

my doctor told me to give my dd juice at 2 months when needed for constipaition pear or apple juice then at the 6 month check up i was told to give her vegtable juces or prune juice once or twice a day when she gets constipated (it works) and apple, prune, white grape, apple cherry when ever .....just 4 oz. at a time i usually water it 50/50 with h2o unless she gets really constipated. .... to not needed my daughter has watered down juice once or twice a day and she is not even close to obise she has the stuff with little or no sugar in fact she is perfectly healthy! as long as it is watered down or ocasionally there is nothing wrong with giving a baby juice in my opion
