I was talking to a friend of mine about this and we are a little conflicted on the subject, so maybe some of you can help. At her prenatal classes they told her to ALWAYS use vasaline or zinc cream every time you change the baby's diaper.. but my doctor told me to NEVER use vasaline, and only use zinc cream when he has a rash. Now her baby girl has a rash all the time, but my son has only had a rash twice in his little life, but i have a boy and she has a girl, so we're not realy sure if the advice is different for each.. what do you guys think?

Our doc told us that babys really dont need diaper rash cream, that when they do get a rash, just let them air out a little, but if you want to use a cream, only use it when they have a rash. I have a girl. We were also told not to use vasaline.

Well i use cream all the time not every diaper change but offten It protects their skin from the urine like a barrier cream which you can also buy I have a girl and she has Never had a rash but I agree No Vaseline.I work at a retirement residence and we use the same cream for the elderly to protect their skin when they are incontinent.

Hey Kerry, I also work at a retirement residence and I follow the same rule with my 5 month old. Mine is for preventing the rash which in the first few months was bad enough to require a special cream from the doc. Now I use Desitin which is working wonders. My son is very allergic to perfumes ect. in diapers and the cream helps so much.

I just use the cream at night before I lay my daughter down for bed since that is the longest period of time that she goes without being changed it helps prevent against diaper rash

I use baby powder after every change and if I see that her bum is a little red then I use peneten. My daughter is almost 5 months and never had a rash (knock on wood).

I use aveeno diaper cream, if my baby is getting a bit red. I will put vaseline over top of it, just so that the diaper cream doesn't rub off on his diaper, and also so his bottom wont absorb any more wetness..

I use a and d ointment (original) I put it on my daghter after every bath, every really wet or really (poopy) diaper and when she gets the slightes bit red she is 5 months old this week and hasnt had diaper rash at all and we are still using the first tube (a little goes a long way) she has only had a very slight iritaion

The only time that I ever used diaper cream was when my daughter had a rash. Which was only about 1-2 times. If your child gets a diaper rash let her soak in her tub a little and wash and dry thoroughly. Apply a SMALL amount of cream. Other then that I never ever used the diaper rash cream Some use it often others dont. I always used a warm soapy wash rag to clean my daughter at each diaper change. So think that helped with keeping the whole rash thing down also. I did not use wipes until she was around 4-6 months old.

I only used it when I noticed the signs of a rash starting. I used a small amount of powder otherwise.

Well it would be nice if the Dr and prenatal people would make up their minds LOL LOL .....when i delivered my babies the nurses would always leave a tube of jelly for the diaper change. and they were always red. but when i got home i used "teddys choice zinc cream" and it all went away. But i did hear that vaseline wasnt good..i think its because of the petroleum in it?????? lol

I read that you shouldn't use vasaline on the diaper area because it can trap germs and provide an environment that makes it easy for the germs to grow. I've also read that you shouldn't use any powder that contains talc because it can be harmful to the baby's lungs. I only use diaper ointment when my daughter looks red and sore. I never use powder, but my mom used to use plain cornstarch. I've found that the best thing for a really sore bottom is aveeno oatmeal bath. I have a friend whose son has a severe peanut allergy, bad enought that they have to carry an epi-pen. She says that the peanut allergy was caused by using diaper cream that contained peanut oil when her son was a baby.

Have you guys seen the new roll on baby powder? Its kinda like a deodorant, you roll it on but it only has the things that baby powder has in it. Really cool, I dont use it but I thought it was neat that you dont have to dust up the whole room by using the powder!

I also used the original AandD ointment.... she was SO raw the first few weeks and desitin did nothing to help... we were told to switch to this since its a little oilier and more water resistent.. and not a single rash since... we used it every change in the first few months, now jsut before bed.

My son has NEVER had a rash, I always made sure to put either vasaline, diaper rash cream or powder, just as long as I put something and he never got a rash NEVER.

I use the zinc cream, but very sparingly. Too much of it can clog up the diaper and it won't absorb as well. So far she's been fine but she's only 2 weeks, so it's early days. I've heard conflicting views on this too.

Wow, the more i hear the more differences i find. Not just on here either, even between all my girlfriends. I guess everyone has their own way. One thing i have heard from ALOT of people though is that cornstarch is the best. Alot of people have told me that the zinc cream has never worked on their baby, but it was all i ever used (when i needed to) and it worked fine for us. Thanks for the input ladies!
