My 3 week old daughter turns bright red, grunts and pushes and screams whenever she poops. I am br___tfeeding, but suplimenting formula since I am not producing enough for her. I have heard that with formula, the poops are more the consistancy of paste. Well, hers are harder, more like playdough when they come out and they come in big clumps- it looks like a 2 years old's poop. My dr says she is not constipated if she is going, but it just doesn't seem right. Has anyone else had this happed? We have also used the dark kero syrup to soften it, but it doesn't seem to be working. We have also tried diluted purne jucie. Any suggestions on what might be causing this?

Did you suddenly change from b___stmilk to formula, I heard that can do it? I was told if I use both to take it very slowly. I would talk to your doctor again, because that's not normal. If he won't listen, get another opinion.

I don't know what kind of formula you're supplementing with, but I use enfamil lipil and my pediatrician told me that can cause constipation. He said that in babies constipation has to do with texture, not frequency. The poop should be squishy and soft enough that it smears all over the baby's b___t. Our doc said I should give my daughter a little bit of water if I noticed hard stools, but no more than 2 ounces during a 24-hour period.

I was told by my pediatrician that if it hard-like clumpy and looked pebble like that she is constipated and that is cause for concern so to call him. I never have had this experience though as my girl is b___stfed.

My recommendation would be to stop giving her anything but b___stmilk. Babies digestive systems are too new to handle anything else. And, milk supply is based on demand - the more she nurses, the more you make. Supplementing with formula while she is this young is sabotaging your supply.

I was going to say what JBear said... Add an ounce or two of water to her diet. A little bit with each feeding.

your b___sts work on supply and demand so you will make your milk situation worse by suplimenting, sounds like your baby is dehydrated, try giving warm boiled water and gripe water after feed

your doctor is wrong - your baby CAN be constipated if she is going. constipation for a baby is hard poop. about not having enough milk to b___stfeed, you won't if you keep supplementing - every bottle you give her tells your body to make less milk for her. women who supplement usually end up nursing altogether because they make less and less, and don't increase their supply when baby has growth spurts. so if you want to keep nursing, i'd be careful. actually, i'd dump the formula.

Our ped told us pretty much the same thing as Jbear's. 2 ounces of water, and to add some sugar to it if the poo is really hard and dry and hurting the baby. I hope you find something that helps!

My daughter's pediatrician said that it's normal for babies to grunt and turn red and cry while pooping. My daughter, who is 4 months now, used to scream her head off and turn blood red when I first switched over to formula about 2 months ago. Now, she just turns red. I thought she was constipated and asked her doctor about it and she said that if she was constipated, it would be little b___s. Good luck!

It's not normal or good to struggle with it.

Picture yourself trying to poop while laying down. I think you'd turn red and grunt too, lol!

I found that sitting Kodi up and moving his legs around help also putting a little pressure on his bum bum helped a lot. All the best :)

It is not normal! Going by your thoughts all babies would struggle as much, and they don't! We're not talking making faces and such, we're talking many signs pointing to the baby being uncomfortable and/or in pain.

How can I tell if my baby is constipated
If the baby’s infrequent stools are firmly formed or come out in hard pellets, or if they cause pain or bleeding (from a fissure or crack in the a__s as a result of pushing), then your baby is constipated.
