Have any of you that have already had children gone through and anxiety attack during labour and if you have what did they do for you? I am quite afraid to go through labour and I am not getting the epidural. I can see me having an attack when it gets really bad.

I had depression and anxiety before getting pregnant, when I got pregnant I stopped the medication. I expected to be anxious while in labor but I was in fact very calm. I also had no epidural, no pain relief. I turned inward and was in the words of me mother "so calm is was scary". I layed on my side in the bed and just thought to myself between contactions. during contractions I squirmed in pain but made no noise. When it came time to push ,all hell broke loose. I didn't scream in pain or cry but I, what I like to refer to as, roared. I roared with every push, so loud it scared my husband and he claimed it echoed. But even then I was calm and contolled, asking between roars, how the baby was doing, wether I could get anything to numb my perineal area, and conversing with the doctor about how hot it was in the room. the moral of the story is that you really have no idea what you're going to be like or feel or what is going to happen during labor. I was a deadringer for an anxiety attack during labor, but I was actually the calmest woman (giving birth naturally) in the labor ward. You might be too ;o)

Thanks for the advice. I will probably do okay as long as there are no complications or whatever.

hi again mandee...when i had my first child i wanted a natural birth and i had the worst anxiety attack ever. i refused an epidural and to cope with the pain, counted. i got to 90...and i couldnt bare the pain anymore. if you have an attack..try counting and if you feel like you cant make it - dont try. my dr. told me that the worst thing you can do is push yourself through pain that you cannot bare. i wish u the best of luck.
