Not Sure Exactly What Dr Did

Hi everyone! I went in today for my weekly exam (I'm due Dec. 23) and my Dr. said he was going to try to stretch "it" and that this sometimes gets things going. Stretch what? I wonder was he referring to the whole stripping the membranes things. For the past week I haven't really been dialting and he said today he could maybe get a finger in the cervix. Anyway, this is my second baby and I was induced with my first because similar to this time around, nothing was going on. My Dr. offered me the opportunity to get induced tomorrow evening, but I'm so trying to hold out for the unexpected labor. However, with the holidays coming and the office being closed a few days and Dr. on vacation, I don't want this pregnancy to linger on forever. I'm already so uncomfortable. Any advice or explanation about what the Dr. did today would be great.

I don't think he stipped your membranes, it just doesn't sound like it, and for what I hear it can be painful. When I was induced my OB referred to 'stretching', but he inserted a balloon to do it. did he maybe do that, or maybe he just used his finger for a few minutes. What else do you remember from the appointment. Just curious why you didn't just opt to induce when it is so close to your due date anyway? I loved being induced. I am not the type for surprises. I don't want to wait for pain, or have my water break at the grocery store. Was your last induction unpleasant?

He just said my cervix was still long and that he was going to try to stretch it and that it may get things going. It definitely was a bit painful, but not unbarable. No balloon involved. I will say that with my first he told me he was stripping my membranes and it felt very much the same. However, he didn't use the term stripping membranes. No, my first induction was great, but I feel I already experienced a planned birth and think it would be nice experiencing the surprise of not knowing when I will go into labor. I guess I'm feeling I want to let nature take its course. Again, my first induction was wonderful, no complaints at all. I guess it's now just a matter of choice. I don't know....... I do still have the night to think about whether or not I want tol opt for the induction because he would want me to arrive at the hospital Tuesday night and he would get things going then.Anyway... Thanks for getting back to me.

Good luck to you, what ever you chose. Let me know what you are going to do.

Up to 3 weeks past your due date can still be considered within the normal range. What is the rush? I am wary of any unnecessary artificial means of inducing labor. This can easily knock you off natures course and put you down a path of medical interventions. Good luck!

Three weeks past your due date is too long, and not safe for the baby. The placenta is getting old at that point and the baby runs the risk of not getting proper nutients and losing weight inutero! 41-42 weeks is the absolute max! Quit telling these women that 43 weeks is alright!!!

Wow mjvdec, My DD was born ONE DAY SHY OF 3 WEEKS pp and she was happy, healthy as can be. Of course I was monotired every other day to make sure all was fine. Yes, in my case 3 weeks was a while and I agree that probably 2 weeks is normally fine. But not everyone is the same!
