or did it happen at the hospital? i've heard it's very uncommon for it to happen at home. also, did you have any signs that your water was going to break soon?

my water broke on its own the first time. no warning, i just sat down and felt a "pop". when i went to the bathroom there was a trickle. when i got to the hospital and got settled it was like someone opened the floodgates. i've heard that once it breaks it is more apparent when you are lying down. if you are sitting or standing the baby's head acts like a cork and slows the flow.

my hubby and I were driving around in a really old car with no shocks, we went over a really bumpy road and all of a sudden it was just GUSH. There was no question about it. It also just kept coming--I couldn't believe I had that much water in me. At the hospitals the nurses wanted to test if it was amniotic fluid..I told them to go ahead "...but either my water broke or my bladder exploded and I think it's more likely the first".
Any other funny water breaking stories?

I have 3 sisters so there are 4 of us in my family, and only one of my sisters had her water break on her first child. The rest of us have yet to have that experience. I've heard it's not very common, but that would be a fun way of knowing you were there... I am on my 2nd baby: )

My water broke on its own as I got out of bed one morning. I thought it was incontenence so I got out the "What to expect..." book and checked it out. It was water for sure. Shortly after my mucos plug slipped out. That was gross!

Mine broke just a little bit at home. It was a constant small trickle. It wasn't until about my 20th hour of labor that it just started breaking...and breaking...and breaking... it was on and off gushes over a few hours. The last gush had meconium in it, so I was sent for a c-section at that point. I had scheduled C's with my next two babies and had them before I went into labor on my own, so my water never broke.

With my first, my water broke on it's own. I took my shower and when I went to pick my leg up to put it in my pants, water started running down my leg. As soon as I stood straight...no more water. The doctor had me come in to see if it was amniotic fluid. He checkes and said it wasn't, but my story was good. He said if I didn't have contractions to head to the hospital that afternoon. Standing in his office, again putting my leg in my pants, water started running down my leg (dh laughing hysterically). Needless to say, I went to the hospital that afternoon and they tested and it WAS amniotic fluid. Ds born that night.

I had been in labor for two days and at the hospital when my broke- about 3 cms dilated. I've read that it only happens first for 15%, but it seems like more from the stories I've heard!

With all three of my kids my water broke before I had any contractions or anything. With my first, it broke while sitting on the toilet to pee, my second, it broke while driving my husband home from work and my third I was taking my glucose test, and had come home and was standing talking to my neighbour and pop.:)Tamara
