Does Castor Oil Really Work

I'm 38 weeks and 2 cm and 85% and the doctor won't induce me until I'm 3 cm or 40 weeks, but I don't want to wait. I've already tried castor oil once but I wan't as far along, and I didn't take that much. I just took 2 oz now so I'll see what happens. I'll keep you guys informed of what happens.

If it doesn't work try tking some Evening primrose oil tablets (1x 1000mg from 34/35weeks then 2x 1000mg from 37/38 weeks) to soften your cervix then take the CO. or another alternative is blackcurrent seed tablets or borage/starflower oil but they are a much higher dose so maybe take after 36 weeks.

Well I tried it and all it gave me was cramps and sudden urges to go to the bathroom, so I wouldn't suggest trying it.

I suggest you go to www.gentlebirth.com it has a big list of ways to induce search for labour induction. The site is ment to be run by midwives.

just took 4 tbs of castro oil i hope it works i better not have drank that nasty stuff for nothin and to every one who dosent have anything nice to say you should just keep your mouth shut just cuz you don't agree with something dosent mean no one else should dont you think that if castro oil was that bad for pregnant wemon there would be some kind of warning on the bottal or and there probly would not be sites that say that is good for you and i really dont think that dr would recamend it rite

I am over 38 weeks, and I have been debating on whether I would try the Castor Oil or not, and then this morning when I woke up I was contracting, and have been all day but only 8-10 minutes apart, and sometimes they are further apart than that. I have had a bloody show and I am 2 cm dilated and 60-70% effaced. The doctor told me it would probably be less than a week, but since I think im having a long prelabor I figured trying a little castor oil wont hurt? I will let you all know if anything happens with me. Good luck to everyone on here. Follow your gut instinct.

I want to take some so bad! I am 36 wks and am thinking that next week I might try or at least by 38wks. I am only dilated at a 2 but my dr sd my cervix is very soft. I also agree if there was a huge risk of taking it there would be a warning about that on the bottle or on the many websites that recomedned it, and doctors would not suggest it!

I've been thinking about taking it for a while now, but I've decided that I'm not going to do it until I go over 40 weeks. I've read Ina May's book (she is a midwife) and it says in there that they induce women at term with castor oil. They give a woman one table spoon of it in the morning after a night's sleep with orange juice or scrambled eggs. Then they wait an hour and repeat it again if necessary. The woman will usually have bowel movements first, and then go into labor IF HER BODY IS READY. It doesn't cause meconium, people say that because a lot of overdue women try castor oil, and as you know baby pa__sing stool is likely as you go overdue.

Lauren's mom - December 10

My daughter is due TODAY! (Dec.10). she's read all the search sites and has tried everything! And of all people she can honestly say it's been long enough...Appendix and right orary removed at 34wks (everyone's fine!). As for the castor oil NOT SO GOOD. It can pa__s thru the placenta and possibly have an effect on the baby's bowels. A bowel movement b4 birth is not good. Try s_x:) walking, and any other suggestions. If anything else it will help pa__s the time:) RELAX and have a gla__s of wine in a nice warm bath with candles (no bubbles...yeast infections)
