I know this sounds gross, but I have been reading about labour and such on the internet and I read about women who eat part of the placenta after the birthing or drink it in a shake. apparently they recover wayy faster and dont bleed as long after. i was just wondering if anyone on here has done this, because as gross as it sounds I am considering it because it helps with the healing process and I think it would be best for my baby if i was nice and healthy for br___t feeding and such.

I've never heard of it...but it could be true. I find the thought of it pretty disgusting and I would never consider to do it! What do they do? Cook it? No thanks for me!

It is a custom in certain countries to eat the placenta but honestly you will be just as healthy without eating it. Have you ever seen one? YUCK! Just stick with vitamins and a healthy diet and you will be as healthy as you need to be. Is doing that even allowed in the U.S? YUCK!

Of course eating it is allowed in the US. Why on earth wouldn't it be? Meghan, if you feel that's something you want to do, go ahead and do it. It's a personal choice. Just ignore the ignorant folks who think it's gross and or disgusting. They have a cultural bias against it.

I personally wouldn't eat it but I know it's been done and it's been done in the U.S. They even have recipes with the placenta as an ingredient (like spaghetti).

I don't consider myself "ignorant" for thinking that this practice is gross/disgusting. Most people would find taking an organ out of their own body and cooking it to eat would be disgusting. After doing some reasearch on Human Placentophagy, yes it is legal to do but not every hospital will allow you to have it. My questioning of it being legal may have sounded ignorant to you but im sorry, the practice just seems a little to cannablistic to me. From everything I have found on the subject their is no medical evidence that it has any health benefit at all. So if a person wants to try it, go for it, it's a personal choice. I still say ewww for my self though.

Celia, i totally agree with you...sure if in certain cultures this is a common practice, that's fine with me. People in other cultures find things we do pretty gross. That's what cultures are all about!BUT that doesn't mean we can't say we think this is really disgusting! This does not make us so-called "ignorant"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I couldn't never sink my teeth into that. I'll just take some extra vitamin pills then.

The thought of eating my own placenta seriously makes this momma want to throw up her lunch! Lots of mommies have healed up just fine by not eating one of their organs, however if you find it something you want to do, more power to ya!! I just definately don't want to see any pictures...lol.

ok, I posted this because i had read about it on the internet and wanted to see if anyone else has done this. I never said i was actually going to do it, and i dont think its fair that I be made feel like I am some sort of cannibal because I was interested in finding facts out about something I thought was good for my baby and me. I even think its gross and its not like I would just eat it raw, i just wanted to see if anyone had done it or heard of it..not to be ridiculed.

I don't think anyone is attacking you personally, but rather expressing their opinion on a practice that you're questioning. By reading most of the remarks, generally people haven't done it either because they haven't heard of it or mostly because they think the thought of it is pretty gross, like you said yourself as well. I think then I would draw the conclusion that maybe it isn't a very common thing to do and I wouldn't go for it. But that is entirely up to you.

It is practice in some cultures if the mother is bleeding heavily post delivery. The placenta contains hormones that help your uterus contract back to it's pre-pregnancy size and shape which is important in clamping off those blood vessels that are left exposed when the placenta comes away.
Your midwife shoudl have a synthetic hormone that can be injected into your thigh that has the same basic effect if she feels that bleeding is an issue for you (a small jab, without the "gross" factor of eating your placenta).

Meghan - PLEASE. You brought the suggestion up and just because we say "ew" doesn't mean we are saying YOUR "ew", just the thought of eating something that was an organ. LOL. Maybe I'll ask my dr next visit if I can do that, just to see the look on her face. LOL!!!!!! XXXXXXX
