last night I went to the hospital with contractions coming 5 minutes apart and increasing in intensity. After about 4 hours they stopped and I was sent home. I am still having braxton hicks frequently, but not with a regular pattern. How long until real labour starts?

The same thing just happened to me, no one can really say. to estimate, I'd have to say give it "about" two weeks. Inactive labor starts when you begin to dilate.

it can't be too long Rhiannon. Your body is obviously getting ready. My body started doing that with my first babe--I'd say about 10 days afterwards my water broke. Hang in there! (;

The same thing is going on with me. I am 3 days away from my due date. I have been dialated 3-4 cm for 1 1/2 weeks now. Yesterday I was having contractions every 5-7 min apart for 2 1/2 hours. I told my husband I wanted to hold off on going to the hospital untill we were sure. I lost my mucos plug a while ago. yesterday I was spotting quite a bit with these contractions (the show) I guess. Sure enough I laid down to try to get some rest for the big event and these contractions slowed down to 2 every 1/2 hr. This is my third baby and no labor has been the same. This one is by far the hardest I have encountered. Calling this false labor is such a let down isn't it. I am starting to feel like a failure and I don't know why. With my other two pregnancies I just knew when I was in labor. (no questions)
So maybe we should just call this practice labor, making us pros for the main event. I wish I knew how long this is going to take for us. How far along are you?
I wish you all a speedy and healthy delivery - whenever it may be =-)
