How Do I Time Contractions

So, last night i started having serious menstrual-like cramps with a dull ache in my back. But there is also these sharp stabbing like pains in my lower abdomen. They continued all night and even all day today. Saw my geyno this afternoon and she said they were definitely contractions and that they will begin to be more regular. I'm not dialating yet but she could touch the baby's head, she's so low. My question is how do i time these pains. The menstrual-like cramps are almost constant, and these sharp pains only last a second or two. How do i time that? Do i make note of each time i have the sharp pain or should i be timing the braxton hicks like tightening cramps that are going on at that the same time. Gosh, this hurts!!

hey swiss chick! sounds sooo similar it's scary. I have the same problem! Those crampies are constant, and then the tightenings come and go---to be honest I don't know..I've been timing the tightenings--but it's hard, because through the crampies sometimes you don't notice that your stomach is getting hard. So from what I can tell online the method is to time from the beginning of one tightening to the beginning of the next. I don't bother with how long they are, until they're under 5 min apart. hope that helps!! And by golly, you might not be able to even read this response, you might be in labour at the hospital as we speak!!! (;

Thanks Smilefull! I'm not at the hospital yet but I live like 2 min away. It's nighttime in switzerland and I don't think it will happen tonight. I have had so many false alarms that it's hard to get excited. Also, it kind of slows down when I sit and becomes more intense when i walk around. Is it like that for you? If I want the labor to progress, should I keep walking around??

tyler0323 - September 12

walking helps when your in labor and when you have a contraction lean on the back of a chair and breath through it. smilefull is right, timing is from the begining of one to the begining of the next, also its good to time how long they last, so when you go to the hospital you can inform them of your progression. gl and congrats.....happy delivery

I live 2 minutes away too!!! That's so funny! I could walk there! I think the docs say you could walk as much as you feel comfortable but don't overdo it and tire yourself out--if you do go into labour you don't want to be exhausted from all the walking---it's called "labour" for a reason! (; My hubby is Swiss, never been there, but he has swiss ancestory and pa__sport. All I've heard about the country has been more than good. (; tyler--good idea to time how long they are!!

yes leaning over a chair or the kitchen counter helps and it feels better when i lay down on the couch. It def hurts more when I'm walking around but I want to progress the labour because I just can't take it anymore! :) Really Smilefull, your husband is swiss? That's crazy! Is he swiss german or swiss french? I live in Geneva and we speak french here. I grew up in the U.S. but my grandparents were originally from Lucern which is german speaking switzerland. My husband is french from Paris. My life in a nutshell. How are your contractions coming? Still crampy? I don't think it will be tonight for me. Maybe tomrorow

Smilefull - September 12

he's swiss german--but like I've said he's never been there. I find it amusing, his grandparents are from Bern? Does that sound right? I'll check with him when he gets home from work. --you grew up in the US, that's why you speak such a clean english! I was about to say! We were actually thinking of immigrating there---how is the immigration process from the US? how accepting is the swiss culture of immigrants? The contractions? grrr...no, today they come and go but nothing like yesterday. I'm hoping tonight though---because my son was born on the 13th, we got married on the 13th and I want her with us tommorow on the 13th--just think that would be soo neat. (;

Life in Switzerland is amazing. It's paradise! Especially for children. It is so safe here. There is only little crime like purse stealing but you never hear of rape and murder like in the U.S. Little kids walk to school all by themselves. I would never move back to the U.S.. Bern is the capital and about 2 hours from where I live. Every swiss city is modeled the same. A beautiful historic town on the banks of a crystal blue lake surrounded by snow capped mountains. It's skiing in the winter and biking, water skiing, music festivals in the summer. Geneva is the most international city in the world and very welcoming! I can email you some pics of switzerland if u like. Plus you give birth in private clinics in Switzerland and you stay for 7 days. It's like a four seasons hotel with known chefs, manicurists and ma__seuses. They show you how to give a bath to your baby, change diapers, and they let you sleep if you want. It's fantastic. Anyway, contractions stopped while I was sleeping last night but are slowly starting again this morning. How long can this go on like this??

Smilefull - September 13

oh wow swiss chick, that sounds soooo amazing. When you say private clinic, does Switzerland have universal health care? I'm actually in Canada, not US. I did a little bit of German in high school but it's not up to snuff by any means---can you get by with english, especially the first little bit? Your contractions started up too this morning? It's 5 in the morning here. I had to get up mine are so painful--3 min apart about a minute long, but I've learned from experience that doesn't do anything. The hospital just sends me home with a sleeping pill. Ah man those chefs, manicurists and ma__seuses sounds sooooo great right now!! You're a lucky girl!

okay - naive question here - I am still working...would I be able to work with these or when that day comes go ahead and call it quits?? BTW - Switzerland sounds awesome!!!

Smilefull that's so cool you are having contractions!! Hope this is it! I'm so frustrated, I've barely had any today after having them for 2 days straight!! I just walked for like 3 hours and all i have to show for it are swollen feet! :) You can probably get by with some english in Berne. Here in Geneva there are 60,000 english speakers. Plus, swiss german is different than regular german, but you'd be suprised how fast you pick it up when immersed. Oh, and tryingx3- i don't know. I had some pretty painful contractions but unless they are regular you could probably keep working. I guess it depends on how you feel. Sorry for the cliche answer but...... Smilefull hopefully yours are progressing and you are on your way!!

tyler0323 - September 13

are you talking about workig while in labor, Trying? id say no, and id say you should be off work about 3-4 weeks prior to due date.

tryingx3 - September 13

I work at the hospital I plan to deliver in...so...my situation is a bit different...I am due in 2wks, have had not change at my "checks" and have not had any contractions...so planning to keep working. Doctor doesn't seem to have a problem with it...her office is also in same building. I was asking more along the line of what these girls seem to be describing "false labor"....sounds extremely uncomfortable...and if I start that will probably go ahead and stop working.

swiss chick - September 13

and it really stinks that something so painful can be called "false" labor!

Smilefull - September 13

swisschick-thanx for all the advice on Switzerland. Maybe one day I'll come visit! I can't believe your contractions are gone today! don't worry, they'll start up and frustrate you to no end soon --I'm sure of it! Seems to be happening to both of us! tryingx3--uhm, you could probably keep working..it's like having a really bad period. You know, you COULD push through...I am a stay-at-home mom, and I tell you, I'm having a hard time keeping up with the housework. Being busy seems to make them worst, and I get tired sooo easily. If I had a choice I would've been "off work" 3 or 4 weeks ago as tyler said!! That's so neat that you work in a hospital. I mean, if something is to happen you'll be right there! And you got all the advice in the world! (Maybe I'm being ignorent and cliche--forgive me, I'm going by what I see in movies/tv--your actual situation might be completely different). Good for you to work for so long! You're a brave soul!

Smilefull - September 13

hey swisschick, don't you get your membranes stripped tommorow?

tyler0323 - September 13

lol, i guess if you work in the hospital then yah that is a bit different. i guess its going to be up to you if you think youll want to be at work when being in pain and uncomfy if you get false labor.
