I'm 37 weeks pregnant, and nervous about giving birth. Not the "pain" part...pretty much because I know it's going to happen (haha), but I am SCARED TO DEATH of the idea of tearing really badly!! Can anyone ease me a little? Thanks. xxxx

Me too, pink, besides the IV its actually my biggest fear. The only solace that I have is that I am not adverse to an epidural, and so shouldn't feel it, and the doctors are going to do their best to control the baby so I won't tear. I am scared to have an episiotomy too, but they numb you first, and my friend said that she didn't notice her tearing because of the pain of labor at the time. Who knows? We may have nothing to worry about. Lets hope...

you know, during labour and delivery what happens, happens. The only thing I cared about during my labour with my ds was an epidural. and i didnt get it (very glad it retrospect). try not too worry too much or focus on any particular thing. Labour really doesnt give you the luxury of thinking about specific things - its far too primal for that. and once youre in the mix, i know its cliche, but really, all youre trying to do is get to the end and meet the bub. as youre really worried about tearing you can do the perenial ma__sage - but it depends mostly on your bodys ability to stretch and the size of your baby. btw, even if you dont tear, its no picnic down there for quite a few weeks after the birth:)

If you are REALLY concerned about tearing, there are things you can do to help prevent it. Talk to your doc about perinium ma__sage to help stretch things out down there before the baby comes. I know the doctors here recommended it to me and it definitely helped. I had a natural birth, 9lb. 5oz. baby with an almost 14 inch around head, and I didn't tear for his head.... but did when his darn shoulder got me, lol. Also a lot of doctors no longer do episiotomies so ask about that. Our hospital doesn't do them for convenience, only if there is a medical reason. Apparently we heal better if we tear. I'd have to agree with that, I only had a few st_tches and I healed up quite well. Makes sense to me to let our bodies do the tearing, rather than a doctor choose the spot to cut. Also, I had NO idea that I'd torn until after when they had to st_tch me up. I mean it all hurt.... lol You'll probably be too wrapped up in getting the baby out to even notice. Oh, and now that I'm all healed, things look a little different but my husband says it all feels the same! lol Good luck to you.

I am 39 weeks and am scared of the same thing, the tearing or episiotomy so you are not alone. This is my first baby. I am not getting an epi so it should be interesting! What did the women do many years ago when there was no such thing as an episiotomy? They more than likely tore, right?
