Stripping Of The Membranes

I would be wary about having your membranes stripped before getting to 40 weeks. I had mine done (without my dr. informing me of what he was doing, which is pretty annoying) at 37+ weeks when I was 1 cm dilated and at a -2 station. 5 days later, my water broke but 15 hours after that, my labor had failed to progress at all and I ended up with a c-section (once your water breaks, a lot of doctors will give you a maximum of 24 hours to deliver, to avoid risk of infection). Basically, I think stripping my membranes 'moved things along' but before my baby was ready to come out. If you can, try to let nature to take its course.

I am 40 + 3 days and had my membranes stripped for the second time today. At last weeks appointment, I had it done and had contractions all night, but then nothing. Since I'm beyond the 40 week mark now and the midwife tells me the baby is very ready to be born, she stripped my membranes again. She says she'll be surprised if the baby isn't born this weekend. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Patience is a viture that I unfortunately don't have and I'm anxious to meet my baby. Wish me luck!

I was due on the 7th. Tomorrow I go into the hospital to have my membranes stripped, sounds like fun. My first child aswell. I am not exactly excited, but reading most of the comments to this question has helped. Good luck to all those to come.

I will be at 40 weeks tomorrow, and not effaced or dilated at all. My Dr. wants to strip mine at my appt tomorrow. I'm hesitant, thinking "Why not just let him try to come on his own?" Since tomorrow is my due date. I understand doing it if you are in a lot of discomfort, overdue, already dilating, etc, but none of that applies to me yet. Sure, I'd like to have my body back to myself, LOL, but reading everyone's experiences, I just don't know if its worth it. It seems to be very hit or miss. With my first pregnancy, I went into labor ON my due date, and my son was born 2 days later. I'm not sure if I should let him do it or not. I kinda think its just too early, that he should have a chance to come on his own.

well my due date was on the 7th too and the dctor stripped my membranes on the 8th. i'm only 2cm dialated but because i'm past my due date they're expecting to induce me this friday. 4 days to go and junior will be here!

Further to having had my membranes sweeped...the next day i went into hospital as I had an infection and had to have an emergency caeserean! Beautiful girl though...Summer Chloe, 9 pounds 4 ounzes !!

Claire, thank goodness for c sections! My 2 yr old weighed 9lbs 3oz at birth, and that was regular. I WISH he'd been a c section! His size caused all sorts of complications, and the *bleeping* Dr's should have taken him C section instead. *grumbles*

Cindi, I'm sure one day i'll share your view and be glad it was by c section....but right now the pain is pretty extreme !!! Although I can only imagine what pain I would have been in trying to get her outnaturally !! lol. Can't win either way really .

i thought about having a c section. but i dont know which is worse, pain wise, c section or v____al?

Hi, I had my membranes stripped at 37 weeks and it sent me in to labor but my contractions stopped. I am now 39 weeks and nothing!

Cindi - July 13

Welllllllll had em done yesterday. *yawn* LOL Didn't hurt any worse than when the dr would check my cervix. I didnt have any cramping, or spotting, or anything. Guess its that "Hurry up and wait" game. I'm still thinking he'll come this weekend. LOL

I had a great pregnancy. At 38 weeks, my doc stripped my membranes. I was hesistant but he rea__sured me it was 60/40 chance of working so I agreed. 2.5 days later my water broke but I was really sick with a high fever. I had an infection and almost died. Unfortunately, my son lived only a few hour because he had an infection too. I've been told that is a rare occurrance of something like this. It's been a difficult 2 months because I've had a lot of guilt dealing with this loss. I thought the membrane stripping allowed bacteria to get inside of my amniotic fluid or something if their was a slight tear. Who knows? I don't know and might never find answers. However, I do believe there are risks to procedure such as this. I don't believe I was well informed as I should have been. I simply trusted my doc and still do for the most part. I am encourage and feel better knowing that other women in my stage of pregnancy and beyond has done this procedure with success.

I am 39 weeks, and since my 36th week, I've only been dialated a half a cm. So tomorrow is my 39th week appointment, and I'm going to talk to my doctor about stripping my membranes. See if maybe it can be done tomorrow. And then maybe schedule a possible induction a day after my due date, next Tuesday. I'll keep you posted.
