I'm 29 and having my second child. My doctor just told me last week that baby has a cyst on the right side of her brain, a marker for Trisomy 18. I am so worried that I find it hard to concentrate on much else, I am so worried. I have to wait 4 weeks for another ultra-sound...I don't know how I'm going to last! I did my research and know that it usually disappears but thought if anyone else has gone through this, maybe I'd feel more reassured. Thanks, Marla

Maria,
My first baby had two large, bilateral (both sides) choroid plexus cysts. I was terrified!!! I had an amniocentesis to see what was going on (even though she had no other markers for trisomy 18; club feet, hands that don't open and close, abdominal malformations) and ended up losing the pregnancy due to the amnio. The kicker is that my baby was ABSOLUTELY FINE!! I know it is hard, but try not to worry. Up until 10 years or so ago, they didn't even know what choroid plexus cysts were, much less to look for them on an ultrasound. I am sure there are thousands of living, breathing, normal people who had choroid plexus cysts as a fetus and turned out just fine. Choroind plexus cysts also resolve themselves around 24-26 weeks. Try to relax, everything will be just fine.

Maria, I just found out that my baby also has two cysts, one on each side. I appreciate this site as I am looking at Amy's answer and I feel terrible for your loss Amy. I am going to wait 4 weeks for my next test. Matilda

Matilda, It's a long wait and a scary one at that. I will be thinking of you. I go back to my doctor on the 3rd, and then for an ultra-sound probably the week after. I'll let you know....marla

Maria,
My son is now 8 months old and healthy! I was also told that my baby had choroid plexus cysts. My husband and I did not know what to do, or how to handle this. It was horrible. After researching through the internet i found other parents who went through this and had beautiful healthy babies. I started reading up on it and the results are very positive.
The problem is really with all this technology. They find anything and everything. It helps to know that others have been through it! I know exactly how you are feeling. But just like Amy said, try to relax.

I need to know where I can find out more information about choroid plexus cyst and Trisomy 18. I can't find a website on these topics. I found out through my ultrasound that there is a .4 cm choroid plexus cyst and that I am h high risk for Trisomy 18. I want to know what this is. Please help.

I think I just typed in choroid plexus cyst...if not that than prenatel cyst on brain. How could you be a risk for Trisomy 18 if they only found a cyst?

Marla:Were you asking me? Or no-one in general because I don't know the answer (at risk for Trisomy 18) If I had the answer I wouldn't have asked the question. I just know what I read from the ultrasound report. Perhaps you are more informed about this topic than myself, if so than please expand.

Clarice: I know that my OB told me that it wasn't a huge deal if that is the only "marker" that was found on the ultra-sound. (Sometimes they find others such as club feet, cleft lip ect) He said that another ultra-sound is done at 28 weeks at which point the cyst ( s) is usually gone. As for Trisomy 18, it is a highly rare chromosonal disorder. A cyst (CCP) is only ONE marker of this disorder, most of the time others show up in the ultra-sound and usually if your doctor feels you are at high risk, and amniocentisis is suggested. Your doctor didn't tell you anything? You found this out by reading your ultra-sound report? I hope some of this has helped you, I know how stressful it is. How far along are you?

We were scared witless also! I am 22 weeks along & at our ultrasound 2 weeks ago, we were told the baby had this cyst. I wasn't given much info either, but did research online. We go for a level 2 ultrasound March 11th. This was especially scary for us as our neice was born last year w/a ma__s in her brain (she was brain dead & died 2 days later). we are keeping our fingers crossed. Sorry for your loss Amy. Everyone else - try to stay calm.

The doctors told me my daughter had the same thing, and I was a wreck. I did my research and it sounded much worse than what they told me. In most cases it goes away, It did for my daughter. Just relax I'm sure everything will be ok.

I just found out today as well at my 19 week ultasound they may have found a choroid plexus cyst. My doctor tod me it was nothing to worry about as the baby has no other problems. (EASIER sais then done) I go back on March 30, 2005 for another ultrasound. I hope it is gone. I am a nervous wreck. If they are so common why do they tell us? And make us worry through a time which is supposed to be joyus!!!!!

ea-Ean,
I know, it sucks. My face is full of blotches from stress and I just want this part of my pregnancy to be over with. It's ruined it totally for me. I was so worry free and felt so good with my first pregnancy. I don't know why they bother telling us if it's not a big deal. Good luck. Let me know how you make out on the 30th.

I had my 18-week ultrasound last week. It probably was a level-2 ultrasound, where they saw bilateral choroid plexus cysts (they did not see them on previous ultrasounds). No other markers for Trisomy 18 were seen. The doctor told me, just as in most of your cases, that just one marker was not very significant. I do not want to have an amniocentesis, because of the risks involved. But my doctor said that another ultrasound would not give me any more information, because the cysts disappear in both healthy and unhealthy babies. My question to you all is: why do you get offered another ultrasound at 24-28 weeks? What is the purpose of that ultrasound? I am seeing my obstetrician this week. If I know what the purpose of the ultrasound is, maybe I can get one too! Thanks and take care!
