Choroid Plexus Cyst

I went the other day to the perinatologist for the level II scan. Within seconds of the scan starting they said it was NOT a CPC, just a completely normal ventricle of his brain that was slightly dilated and NOTHING to worry about. Praise God! I also got some beautiful pictures of his face in 3D, he is going to be the cutest little guy. I worried so much for 2 1/2 wks and that news was a total blessing. I'm due in January and now I'm looking forward to my son's birth. Thanks so much for the wonderful thoughts. I'll keep you all in mind and prayer.

What medical problems can be detected in a fetus?

Megan - October 19

Sandy, so glad to hear your happy news and I wish that for all the Moms posting to this site!!! These CPC's are very common it seems, and since the testing these days is so comprehensive, I think we are just given so much information to worry us, often for no reason at all. Enjoy your pregnancies ladies!!!

Someone very close to me went thru this a couple of weeks ago - they went for a level 2 ultrasound a few days later and it turned out THEY COULD NO LONGER FIND THE CPC!!! while researching I read a physician comment that cpc's are often just normal growth and development. You are very young & chances of a problem are a__sumedly VERY low if you began your pregnancy as low risk. Don't let them spoil you pregnancy. When I had my children (over 30 yrs. ago) fortunately there were no ultrsounds!!!!

I have been having complications. I had a ultrasound to check my cervix, which had been shortening. I ask to check the cysts. I am now 22 weeks pregnant. The cysts are still there. The doctor says do worry. They will check again the 28th week. I am currently on bedrest and my mind keeps going back and forth. I feel better however reading all of your input.

I wrote a few times on this board because of bilateral cysts. This board rea__sured me a lot during my pregnancy and I don't regret not doing the amnio even though I am 41. I'm happy to tell you all that (after 3 girls) I gave birth to a very healthy babyboy (9 ponds 12 ounces). It almost went wrong during the delivery because of a severe shoulder dystocia, but that had nothing to do with the cysts of course, also a renal dilation that they saw in utero cleared up totally. Good luck to all of you.

I wrote back in August that on my 18 week u/s bilateral CPCs were found. I am ecstatic to say that my u/s at 29 weeks has come back showing that the CPCs are now gone and everything looks just fine. Now I can enjoy the rest of my pregnancy with no worries. I hope and pray for the same results for the rest of you wonderful women. Stay positive..from what I have seen so far..these CPCs usually just disappear.

My wife and I are having our second child. We were told the baby has multiple choroid plexus cysts after our first ultrasound at about 18 weeks. Because of this, we were advised to have the triple screen. The results of that were positive (higher risk than the threshold) for Down's Syndrome. We had the Level 2 ultrasound and they are still there at about 21 weeks, but they did not find any other markers. The consultation Dr. said that the cysts themselves add to the risk for Down's Syndrome, but I have read things that suggest by themselves they are not a__sociated with an additional risk. Does anybody have any information on this type of situation?

Keith, i can completely understand what you and your wife are going through. I too was told that my baby had choroid plexus cysts at 16 weeks, however they had resolved themselves by 18 weeks, but my triple screen came back higher than normal for down syndrome also. I have also read that they cysts are not a__sociated with downs. There is a WONDERFUL website that you can go to that has helped me tremendously. It is parents who are going through the same things we are going through, and it has a message board where you can read posts by other parents to be, and also ask questions of your own. The address is www.choroidplexuscyst.org---please visit this site, Im sure it will help answer some of your questions. I wish you and your wife the best, Im sure everything will be fine.

Maria, I just, 1/2 hour ago, came from a genetic specialist. My baby also has EIF. I am grateful to say after much praying, everything is fine. Reject what the doctor is saying, do not receive it and have faith, this is coming for a NON RELIGIOUS person, trust me. Your baby will be fine! I was told that technology picks up on things nowadays that it never used to, basically, terrifying pregnant women. Good luck and God Bless You

Wanted to update...I had a choroid plexus cyst diagnosed at 18 weeks via level 2 u/s...worried myself into a frenzy about the a__sociation with trisomy 18...no other markers were found so I decided against amnio,BTW I am 45. I am happy to report on Nov 8th Lily Ann was born PERFECTLY healthy.....so PLEASE don't worry, I know easier said than done but it looks like it is RARE for trisomy 18...enjoy your pregnancies!!!!!

I am 33 years old and pregnant with my first baby. My 18 week ultrasound revealed a left sided choroid plexus cyst. I am waiting for a more detailed ultrasound and appointment with a genetic specialist (impateintly I might add) but I am starting to get the idea from reading these e-mails I will be waiting until 28 weeks. Did anyone have an ultrasound immeadiately after their cyst was diadnoses?

First off, congrats to the healthy Moms and babies...it was so rea__suring to read all these posts. I had a cpc seen by the OB then referred to a perinatologist for a Level II scan 10 or 12 days later which revealed a perfectly normal brain. I was 24 wks at the time and the Perinatologist said it wasn't even a CPC. But after speaking with him and going over my history, he, too, agreed that just having a CPC and no other "markers" (i.e. thickening at the base of the neck, fists not opening and closing, certain hand positions, AFP levels up) that a CPC really isn't anything to worry about. He also said that CPCs don't just generally occur on one side of the head as well as they are much bigger than .9 cm. But what normal person wouldn't worry?? Needless to say, they see them in the OBs office pretty often, I'm told, and refer you to a specialist to "make sure" everything is OK. I believe everyone here has had good results and most true CPCs resolve themselves by 28 wks. There are many, many resources out there to gain some knowledge and educate yourself. Lord knows I did after the OB pretty much scared us out of our minds and was WRONG to boot! Oh well, he's only human. I'll be praying for good news on your behalf. Best of luck.

Thanks for the rea__surance Sandy. I have read only positive notes on this site which makes me feel good but as you said the idea of anything being wrong with your baby is devasating and although we are trying to be positive we also want to be prepared for the possibility that something could be wrong. I am just afraid if we have the att_tude "its never going to happen to us", it will. I have had many irrational fears since I became pregnant. Its not about having a perfect baby, we just (like evryone else) would never want our child to suffer.

Just thought it might be helpful to some of you ladies to read my thread. It is under the THIRD TRIMESTER category under BABY'S BRAIN. My baby has fluid retention in the ventricles in his brain. Just thought it might be helpful! Good luck to you all!

My daughter had a Choroid Plexus cyst. They did a 2nd state U/S and offered me a amnio. The chances of me causing a problem were the same as her having a problem, besides, they didn't figure it out until 5mo. I prayed alot and she was born healthy and is now 6 and beautiful, smart and no problems what so ever! I swear with this pregnancy I am NOT doing any of those tests. like AFP, they said she may have Down Syndrome. Gees, they drive you nuts!
