Marta, I had an amnio at 15 weeks due to advanced maternal age (I was 39). They had to stick me twice, but it was not as painful as I thought it would be. I had no complications from the procedure and my baby boy turned out perfect. He is almost one year old now....born last Oct 9. I also had an amnio at 38 weeks to determine the maturity of his lungs because I was having complications from preeclampsia. It's not a big deal and although it seems scary....it's not too bad at all. Good luck

Thanks a lot for sharing! I am not so much afraid of the procedure...more of the outcome...I have 1:238 ratio for T21...this is not bad but not the best...I am jsut anxious to find out that my baby is super healthy. Will try to relax then:)

Hi Martha - I'm about 36 weeks along with my 2nd pregnancy. I had an amnio done with my 1st pregnancy - I was about 20-21 weeks. When I had my regular 20wk u/s, the doc found a white spot on her little heart - they thought she might have down syndrome. They scheduled me to come in for a level 2 u/s and I had no clue I was having an amnio done that same day. They just wanted to be sure all was well. I'll be honest, I was super scared and was regretting it half-way through. I'm a huge baby myself so I was crying through the entire procedure but as docbytch mentions, it's really not as bad as it seems. It was insane waiting 2 weeks for the results to come back! Everything was negative and that little white spot was just a calcium deposit! Now she's 4! Good luck to you. Lots of hugs!

I had a 1:20 chance of having T18. It was an awful feeling just thinking something might be wrong with the baby. The actual procedure is not painful, the worst part of it all is definetely that darn 2 week wait. Baby turned out to be healthy. If I get pregnant again I am definetely not taking the blood screening because of the stress and anxiety it caused. Good luck to you and please let us know how it goes.
