Ease Your Pregnancy Discomfort with Pregnancy Massage

Pregnancy massage also known as pre-natal massage is a type of massage specially designed for a pregnant woman's body and needs. Make sure your therapist is a certified pregnancy therapist and you consult your doctor before receiving one.

Pregnancy massage is different from regular massage

Pre-natal massages differ from regular massages in a couple of ways. The biggest way it differs is the massage therapist must specialize in the anatomy of a pregnant woman and be aware of the stages of pregnancy. Since, the positioning and the parts of the body that are massaged will differ.

What position to use pregnancy massages?

More than often the massage table will be arranged so the expecting mother can lie in a semi-reclining position. Although, this position at first may not be the most comfortable, it is the safest position for the baby.  To have your back and hips massaged, you'll need to rotate from side to side.

How is the comfort level different from regular massages?

To provide extra comfort for anxious and tired moms-to-be, pregnancy massage therapists use body pillows, wedge pillows, and extra padding. Although, the room setting may look similar to a regular massage parlor, therapists will often use dimmer lightening and a heated, extra- padded table and will play soft music in the background. Some therapists may give you an option of listening to a baby's heartbeat in the background, whereas some might set the mood with scented candles. If you encounter music or scents that you don't like, they will easily be changed to suit your preferences.

How much clothes do clients wear during a pregnancy massage?

This is a personal choice that you and your therapist can discuss. Most pregnant women remove all clothing, but are always covered by sheets. Some women may choose to keep on their undergarments, depending on their comfort level.

Can all pregnant women receive massages?

Many therapist request pregnant women to get a written note from their doctor or midwife saying they can receive massage therapy during pregnancy. Since massage therapy may not be suitable for pregnant women with blood clots and other conditions.

However, most healthy pregnant women after the first trimester can receive a massage. Even women carrying multiple babies can benefit from pre-natal massages.
