48k/yr barely covers a family of 6. So taking the WIC program is good. Its not welfare.

I lived on a military pension income and found wic. It was great !!!! Kept me healthy during pregnancy by allowing me to afford cereal, cheese and milk -- which I otherwise probably wouldn't have had enough of. They also MAKE YOU go in for cla__ses which can be very helpful. They do b___stfeeding cla__ses, nutrition and other things. This is a good program. It takes alot of income to not qualify. It's actually so underused, that they beg mothers to get on it here in Illinois because they are afraid of losing it. I am 37 weeks pregnant and no longer need the help because I was smart and divorced my ex and his little paycheck (not for that reason) but they have actually come to me and pretty much begged me to sign up. My doctor requires that pregnant women go to the health department for your initial pregnancy test and because of this, wic got my name and address. For almost 8 months they've made visits and called me asking that I come sign up.

FYI and I have no opinion on this b/c I do not know you ladies, or your situations. I am not here to judge, at least on this!! WIC is welfare if there is a need to qualify based on income. Sorry, but its true. There are several types of welfare available to the public. WIC is one of them. Peace to the mommies!!

Hmmm. I may be wrong and right. It may be based on the state you live in. Iowa says it is not welfare, as there are no requirements for reform/work. California states that it is welfare.

I would like to say I work for social services & WIC is not welfare ladies. It is a program to help babies & mothers get the proper nutrition they need. I would also like to add in reading your post that the lady that makes $48K a year for a family of 6 would qualify for WIC in our state. That is not considered a high income for a family of that many. I hope you all have a nice day.

Sharon, you are right. Most sites say it is health care, and not "welfare". Why would anyone make disparaging remarks toward women who are trying to eat healthy for the sake of their unborn baby, and/or want their children to recieve nourishing food that they might otherwise go without? I don't understand the need to put people down when they are trying to make healthy choices for their bodies and families. Also, many mothers could easily "get a job" and place their children in daycare, to spend the good part of the day with strangers who do not have the child's best interest in mind or at heart.

In response to E's comment of "WIC is welfare if there is a need to qualify based on income." So that means that those of you with a credit card who spend $1000 a month and only pay back $150 and who by the way must qualify according to income are on welfare

Oh god.... This type of argument is always fun... Credit cards are not government hand-outs and a person is not given a credit card based on financial need or hardships for that matter. Anyhow, you should read on instead of focusing on my earliest post.

Anyone who really depends on credit cards is headed for welfare, or bankrupcy...I'm curious, are all of you just waiting until your infant is down for a nap to come pick fights here? I'm picturing people who are so frantic to bash those on WIC or welfare that you let your baby cry while you sit and stare at the screen and try to come up with the worst insult you can imagine. Personally, I'm glad we live in a country where various kinds of help are available. Would you rather we lived like they do in Mexico, where you see women begging in the streets, with their babies tied to their chests and several dirty, barefoot toddlers looking at you like they haven't eaten in days? Would you feel better if there was no way for poor women to get prenatal care? If lots of pregnant women died because they didn't get the care they needed? For those of you who have always had health insurance, when you don't have insurance and you go to the doctor, they want cash up front. Should a woman who's working a minimum-wage job with no benefits spend a week's pay on a doctor visit and labwork? Should she go hungry to pay for an ultrasound? I agree that there are people who abuse the welfare system, but there are also people who USE the welfare system because their survival depends on it. I can't look at someone, or read their post, and decide that they're abusing the system. I don't think any of you can, either. Just be glad you don't need help, and if you have to look down on people who do need help, try to keep it to yourselves.

The point about how wonderful it is to live in a country where a woman is not forced to beg on the streets to feed herself or her children, was profound. Thank you!!!

I am on WIC, I am not sure what WIC will give you when it comes to formula. All I know is right now(since I haven't had my baby yet) they give me 5 and a half gallons of milk a month, peanut b___ter, 2 dozen eggs, cheese, and cereal. When I have the baby I am supposed to set up an appointment for me and the baby to get my formula. And yes you do have to be low income. I am on medicade and wic but either way you must be low income because to be on medicade you have to be low income. Or where I live you do.

I am on WIC myself and not really thrilled about it. But you know what, its putting food in my daughters mouth and feeding me some stuff I can't afford to buy all the time while I am pregnant again. I don't think anyone should down grade anyone about being on wick. You can never know what anyones situation is for being on wick. I pay my bills, have a full time job and have health insurance, but my income does not bring in enough. My husband is out of work right now due to a serious on the job injury requiring him to have multiple surgeries. So things are really tight right now trying to live off just my income. So that is my pitty party. It helps people when the help is really needed. I am thankful for that!
