OK here is the story, since my baby was born, when he was about 2wks or so, I can here clicking sound from his shoulders when he moves, and ankle(when I change his diaper)..I told the dr on my baby's 2 mths check up, and she says that my baby has loose ligaments, and it caused by the hormones that I produced during pregnancy...I kinda worry here, any of u have same problem? I have to wait until 4 mths for the dr to check it

My SIL's baby when born had a "clicking", in his hip, and she noticed it most when he was being changed. Turned out his hip socket wasn't totally rounded, and his leg bone was slipping in and out. He had to wear leg braces for about 6 months in order for his leg bone to create a new "groove", in his hip bone. He is just fine now, and walks awesome! Having the brace never affected his developmental growth at all, and infact he learned to crawl with it on!

My first daughter's joints made popping sounds when she was little. I never thought anything about it because mine do the same thing (I'm one of those people who can crack their knuckles just by flexing the hand). I've never even mentioned it to our doctor...maybe I should have, but she's 3 now and has had no problems.

Amaya's mommy aka Stephanie - September 12

When Amaya was born, her hip joints clicked. It was because they cartilage had not fully grown in yet. By the time she was tweeks old it had pretty much stopped clicking. We were just told to be very careful when changing diapers. It doesnt really hurt baby's for their bones to slip out of the joints but it can cause small chips and things in bones and that can later on cause problems, so just be careful!

my 4 month old ankles do the same thing. i never thought anything of it but now i'll ask my doctor hers has been doing this since birth. i wonder if its normal.

One of my friends' kids had the same thing. And she had to do the same thing as Chelsey stated. I would not wait until the 4 month check up. If you were not completely satisfied with what your ped said call an orthopedic doctor and take it from there.

Hi everyone, my baby isn't due until December, but for a few weeks now I've been hearing popping sounds to me it sounds like when you pop your knuckles. I don't know what it is, have any of you experienced this while you were pregnant?

My son is now 5 mos and I've noticed the clicking & cracking around his shoulder and neck area from the beginning. I mentioned it to my dr at his 2 mo checkup but she said just to monitor it. At his 4 mo, I told her I could still hear it and how long should I be monitoring it? She admitted she had never heard of this before and has referred me to an orthopedic specialist - my appt is this week. In some ways, I'm not too concerned becoz' baby seems to be developing fine (i.e., rolling over and pulling himself up) but who knows if it is maybe a sign of something else. I will let you know what results are from appt

when are you hearing this sound? What range of movement are you doing when it occurs?

Cheryl - September 25

I hear it when I pick him up or when I'm moving his arms to put into a sleeve. I don't hear it all the time though. Unfortunately, I'm gonna have to reschedule his appt so if anyone else gets anymore info - i'd like to hear about it.

When babies are born, their bones are still pretty soft. Their ligaments (Structures which hold their bones into socket) have not hardened, and are extremely flexible. This makes it easier on the mom and baby while they are born. The clicking from birth could be attributed to the baby's bones rubbing against other bones while flexing, or moving, because these ligaments are so flexible. I think if this persists after 3 or 4 months, I would definately get it checked out. Around 4 months, the ligaments are noticeable becoming more stringent in their range of motion.

Usually when I hear the popping sound I'm sitting down or laying down. When the baby moves is when I hear it, someone told me that the baby might be kicking me in the ribs, but I don't feel anything. I go to the doctor on Oct. 10th, so I'm going to mention it to him. But like I said it's usually when the baby moves and he's really active, I was thinking when he moves could it be his joints popping?

To melissa - September 28

I would get it checked out. It's probably nothing, but you don't want to take the chance. Let us know what the doc says.

i've just started to experience the same thing with my 3 month old baby. when i pick him up, i can hear a little clicking sound coming from his shoulders. i wouldn't worry too much, it seems like a lot of babies have it. it will most likely go away with time. and if not you can always bring it up with your doctor.

U know guys it's kinda scary cos seems like it's not only my baby's ankle and shoulder that clicking, but also his wrist, sometimes neck, and tailbones. It only happens while I pick him or/hold him. I feel guilty if it's really my hormones tat cos him to be this way. Tats my only concern though, otherwise he is a happy baby and seems like he is developing well..lots of cooing laughing, kicking and learning to roll over, and he is gonna be 3 mths soon.Babies are adorable aren't they? For cheryl, how was your appointment?

Cheryl - September 30

I was not able to make the appt but I brought this concern up at my baby group that meets once a week. There is a range of ages in the group, from 0 mos to 13 mos and almost everyone said they felt the same cracking. Alot of the older babies' moms said that their babies stopped the cracking after about 7 mos -- around the time they started to move around alot. So I think that I will wait to see what happens in the next few months. Like I said, he seems to be developing well so far and I don't want to put him under any unnecessary poking & prodding like the ultrasound I was supposed to do. I hope you will keep me updated on your baby, and I hope that I will be able to share more helpful info with you soon enough. Enjoy your little one!

OK, my daughter is 16 months old and I just started to notice the clicking sound (about 2-3 weeks ago) when I pick her up or move her a certain way...it doesn't appear to bother her, but she is delayed in the gross motor area and I wonder if this is the reason why. She never crawled, rolled over or pulled up - she b___t scooches very well and can get around very fast that way (but she didn't start that until 12 mos, when most babies are walking); she can walk very well while holding our hands, but not independently. We just had her evaluated a 2nd time and they said that she was born w/ low muscle tone in her torso and mouth (she's resisting a lot of grown up foods; probably too hard for her to chew). We will start Physical Therapy in a few weeks to hopefully catch her up, but now I worry that there's something more to this clicking sound. We meet w/ her Ped. next week think I'll bring up the ortho doc. Signed, worried Mom
