I am 38 weeks along and am al ittle anxious for my baby boy. We were instructed by the doctor on Christmas Eve that we were NOT allowed to travel and visit family. So I have been stuck at the house for 5 days now. I am bored out of my mind and the waiting is killing me. I started walking yesterday (it was 45 min walk), I was having contractions about every 5 min. and the minute I came home and sat they slowly diminished. Until this morning my lower abdomen and groin/hips hurt so bad that I could barely walk. I went on another walk this morning and haven't had the same pains, but my belly gets really tight and is consistently tight for the entire walk with lower back pains. Because I am so tight I am having a hard time telling if I am having contractions or not..... but the walking causes the tightness and the lower back pain. You think it is doing anything positive? My husband wants to take me out again this afternoon......

walking is good for getting the baby in position. other than that, it's not a way to jump-start labor. i try to walk for an hour everyday, and i get the same feelings as you - back pain, pain in my lower abdomen - very crampy. it starts up 'false' contractions, but never goes anywhere. i've been in early labor for 3 weeks now! however, everyone is different.. and walking is definitely good for you.

Shelbi is correct, it won't jump start labor, but it can definitely help it get moving. With my first child, I was in labor and everyone who saw me that day kept saying I needed to walk. I waited until the late afternoon and finally decided to take a walk. It got things moving for me pretty fast and 4 hours later, there was my daughter. I keep seeing this (encouragement to walk while in labor) on baby shows I've been watching on Discovery and TLC. I believe the tightness and lower back pain are the contractions.

I called my doctor about cause the first day that I walked I got a ton of pressure in my pelvis and could barely walk for the rest of the day and through the night. She told me that if walking was bringing on braxtons that strongly, that it was not a good idea to be walking.
