Hi-I keep reading about girls who say "my doc stripped my membranes." Okay, so what does that mean? I have an appointment next week, but I don't want to wait that long to ask. Obviously my first pregnancy--THANKS!!

It is actually not stipping the membranes it is stripping or sweeping the cervix. Stripping (sweeping in England) the cervix means putting the finger between the cervix and uterus and separating the membranes from the wall of the uterus. This causes the release of a chemical which is then converted into prostaglandins which if enough is released may cause some uterine contractions. Stretching the cervix is putting two fingers insdie the cervix and separating the fingers to stretch the cervix. While it is sucessful for a few, for many others it does not work. I personally have never had it done. I have heard from some it is extremely painful, for others it is just uncomfortable...

Thanks! I looked it up online but I kept getting explinations that were really long or really over my head. Thanks for putting it in plain words for me.

Hey Angeev - did you try this? I had my cervix stripped the day before I was due. Did not hurt any more than getting a pap smear done and it worked for me! I went into labor the next morning.

I had it done twice with my first pregnancy...it did nothing. I had it done once with my second pregnancy and I started labor contractions 3 hrs later. I think it just depends on whether or not your body's ready.

I forgot to say that I didnt think it was painful. Just an uncomfortable feeling. It can be painful for some though.
