Hi, I was induced using pitocin with my daughter. half an hour after they started the pitocin they broke my water, half an hour after they did that my contactions started. I labored for about 3 hours 45 minutes, pushed for 20 minutes and she was out. According to stat_tics this is fast for a first baby. I was only induced because of medical reasons, next time I plan to let myself go naturally. Do you think my labor will be quick with my next one too, or was it just because of the induction that it was fast? If it has any impact on it, my mother and grandmother had short labors, and also I did not have pain meds during labor. I ask because I always thought that using pitocin sped up labor, but when they started administering it at 7:00 A.M. the nurse told me "You'll probably be here all day, or you could blow us all away and have her by noon!" Abby was born 6 minutes after noon, lol. Anyway, if anyone knows anything about it, let me know. Thanks!

Hi Erica: everything I've read says that pain meds (specifically the epidural) slow labor way down. I wonder if yours was fast because you went without? I'm like you in that my mom had short labors and no meds...I'm due next week so I'll let you know if I'm the same!

id also like to know the answer to this, but my situation was the complete opposite, i had my first naturally 22 hours it took with no pain meds, i read a few comments that second time around should be quicker, i wonder how much this is true

I was induced with #1 and labored for 6 hours. With #2 I went all natural and she was born in 8 hours. She was also 2 lbs bigger, so I don't know if this made a difference. My pushing time was the same with both of them...20min.

In my opinion, once the bag of waters is broken, your baby is out REALLY soon. My first baby was out 4 hours after my water broke naturally and my second was born in under two hours after my water broke naturally. Both labor/delivery was with no pain medication because I didn't even have time to get it grrr!! I almost had my second in the car!

2 induced labours, both with an epidural (second time around it didn't take, but still got it) first was 5.5 hrs, second was 4.5 hrs. You can't believe everything you read...everyone is different.

Wow I guess there really is no formula! Every body and baby responds differently. What a variety! I hope for the very best for all you moms getting close to the big day!

When I got to the hospital I was 8 cm dialated and the doctors said I would be less than an hour before the baby was born if I did not get an epidural. I decided I wanted the epidural and it lasted about 10 hours-3hours pushing. I was okay though because I had strepB and I was able to get all the medication that I needed so my baby would be okay.

They broke my water at 9AM after 10 hours of pain-free contractions every 5 minutes. I continued to have pain-free contractions until about 3PM then they gave me pitocin which they said didn't do much but I started to feel some pain. They gave me an epidural at 7PM which didn't take and at 8PM they said my labor had slowed. I started pushing at 9PM. My baby was born at 9:12PM. This was my first baby.

Hi Erica - I was pretty fast with my first too - total under 7 hrs. I had a little nubain for pain. My second was another story! I made the mistake of "thinking" that the second would be faster and easier. It wasn't - all ended well, but don't read on if you don't want a labor scare. I went in around 10pm, was almost 2 cm so they sent me home with sleepy pills and told me to come back at 9am. My husband and I woke up at NOON! No contractions though - then I felt a teeny "pop" with a little water. I went to my ob's office (at the hospital) and they found me at 5cm (still couldn't feel contractions). No IV, no meds because they told me the baby would be out within the hour. I started feeling HORRID contractions (baby was posterior), went to 7 cm quickly. Stayed in transitional labor for 6 hrs! It was many times more painful than my first. Got to 10cm and didn't feel any urge to push at all. Not because I was scared or in pain but because I really didn't have any "urge". They told me I had to push because my dd's heart rate was starting to drop so I did - and it didn't take long. After all that, I am still in awe at how quickly that pain and misery just evaporated. Soon after, I actually WALKED to my room! We're trying for a third (7 years later!) and I never had that "maternal amnesia", though after this much time it's faded a little. Point is, NOTHING in my birthing cla__s prepared me for that second experience. They really should emphasize that there are no guarantees. Good luck, and I hope you follow the "trends"! If it's worth anything, my friend's second was start to finish an hour and a half!!!

my first lasted 13 hours start to finesh. i dialated from 3 to 9 in about 5 minutes, and it still took a little while after that for her to come out. i had a little bit of demeral and that was it. I have always heard and been told the second is faster because your body has been through it before. as for how long, no one knows forsure, its up to the baby i guess
