When Does Dilation Efffacement Begin

I am 34 weeks pregnant w/my second child. Doc says my cervix is very soft but that's all she mentioned. Anyone know about when dilation begins? With my first child, I walked around for weeks at 4cm and still ended up being induced. Just curious.

it can at anytime---if you start dilating before 37 weeks the doctors will worry about preterm labour.
