Un Normal Cycle And Pregnancy

I was a late starter in highschool (started at 17). My "normal" period (not on birth control) is about every 2 to 3 months. My husband and I want to start a family. I've been to my doctor and taken the Day 3 blood tests. Other than the possibility of polycystic overies, my fertility work-up was normal. The problem I'm having is that I don't know when to expect my period because of the extremely long cycle. I went off of birth control at the end of February. I think that was my last period before I had spotting at the beginning of June. I had a full period at the beginning of July, and have not had one since. I've started checking my ovulation daily to find the LH surge. If my husband and I are having s_x daily, and I get pregnant, will the LH surge show? Also, because I'm not sure when my period should come, how do I know when I should take a pregnancy test?

Every other day will be often enough (and is how frequently is recommended when trying to conceive). If you're checking your ovulation, you should be able to test 14 days after that at the earliest. You will get a LH surge right before ovulation, so it would be impossible to get pregnant without having a LH surge. Regardless of how long your cycle is, you typically ovulate 14 days before your period starts, so it seems to be quite reasonable that you haven't yet ovulated if your cycle is 2-3 months long.

Did the doctor confirm if you are in fact ovulating? A friend of mine is going through this now and is having erratic (long) cycles due to PCOS. She just found out via blood test that although she did get her period, she did not ovulate. I would discuss it with your doctor. Good luck.

I tested for my LH surge daily and got my surge in July prior to my last period so I'm a__suming that means I'm ovulating?? I guess I should confirm that with my doctor, but when I got the blood tests done, she said other than one high result which could be due to PCOS, everything else seems normal. I just a__sumed that meant that I'm ovulating. She pretty much told me that until we are actually trying and failing (or succeeding), it's a guessing game. I guess I just want to know if between now and when my LH surge is supposed to happen (which I don't know) can I get pregnant and if I do will the LH surge show up if I'm pregnant? Also, the pregnancy tests always say up to 4 days or day of expected period for most accurate results, but when I don't know when that is supposed to be is it a waste of time for me to use the pregnancy test? Does that mean that if I'm pregnant it won't show a positive result if the test is not taken near the time of my period? In other forums, people said that you could get pregnant prior to LH surge so that's why I was wondering. Anyway, thank you for your help!

You won't become pregnant until you ovulate about 24-36 hours after the lh surge indicated by the opk's. Since sperm can live inside for up to 5 days, s_x from 5 days prior to ovulation can result in pregnancy (that's best case, not average). I think your only issue is when to test with an hpt. I have heard people say that an opk can be used as an hpt, so to answer your question, I think you could in fact get a positive opk when pregnant. I do not know this for sure, I have never tried it but have heard other poster say it's true. Typically implantation takes 7-10 days, so if you suspect you are pregnant, I would not test before 10-14 days from the suspected date of conception. I hope that makes sense. It will be difficult for you due to the erratic cycles.

That does make sense. Thank you very much for your advice!
