For all of you mommies who have done this before, I have a question about what kind of options you have to help ease the pain of labor? I've heard there is a difference between a spinal and an epidural, but what is it exactly? I heard one will numb you while the other numbs you and renders you practically unconscious (lol). I ask because I am not good with pain the the idea of natural childbirth scares me terribly. I'm looking for some reassurance that there are good drugs out there that will help, thanks!

hi tiffany! My son is now 8 months old. I had an epidural. I don't really know the difference between the epidural and a spinal. The epidural was WONDERFUL!!!! From about 10 minutes after I got the shot, I couldn't feel anything. It was great! Then when I was actually pushing, I did not feel one bit of pain. i can't believe it worked so well. It did hinder my ability to push somewhat because I couldn't feel anything, so I didn't really know when to push. They asked me if I wanted to continue with the epidural or without, and i chose to keep it. It took an hour and a half of pushing, but i think that was only because i am really little and my son's shoulders got stuck. I think the epidural really really helped. I would do it again with one. Good luck in choosing.

I've had both. I had an epidural for my first baby while in labor. They inserted a catheter with it, and when that labor eventually ended in c-section, they just put the meds right into the catheter. My next two babies were scheduled c-sections and I had a spinal with #2 (was put to sleep with #3). There was no catheter with the spinal. Neither one, though, epidural or spinal, made me out of it, or unconscious, just made me numb from the chest down. In that regard, they felt exactly the same!! The epidural worked great for me while in labor- took away all of the pain!! Good luck!

i don't mean to scare you more but epidurals don't always work wonders when i had one it only numbed one side of my body and i could feel everything n the other side although it worked better when it came time to push only took 28 mins, so i would just have a back up pain relief method like hot packs or demerol i liked the hot packs also if your already past 6 cm when you ask for the epi they won't give it to you so make sure you ask for one early even if your pain isn't bad yet

I am not sure about the spinal but the epidural helped me big time but I got it about an hour before she was born. Just for the pushing part. I was in so much pain with the contractions that I didn't even feel the epidural being put in but I highly recommend it. I didn't feel the contractions after that just the pressure of her moving down in my birth ca___l. And I felt that I had to push. But no pain.

When I was in labor they told me they would give me an epidural if I had enough time for it to kick in.. a spinal if not. Apparently the epidural takes longer to work but is able to work longer.. a spinal will give you the same results but much quicker, they will give you that if they think that you are too far along for an epidural
