Im only 19w/2d but I've been reading on all the forums especially the labor questions forum... I'm also a frist time mom and sometimes all this labour talk sounds like another language to me lol But I havent been to any birthing classes or hospital tours or anything like that yet either... What does it mean to use gas and air when in labour?? I've never heard of something like that...

its like an oxygen mask that makes you feel light headed and distacts you from the pain during a contraction but you need to suck in a good two deep breaths before the peak of a contraction to get the full effect it doesnt take the pain away but i find it really helps as you are breathing through the contrations which is really good to do as if you hold your breath etc you have worse contrations well thats my view anyway ive gave birth three times with gas an air on my fourth child now

I used the gas and air with my one and only ds. It was great! You could still feel pain but not as bad and you didn't really care. I liked the fact that you could control when you needed it because you had to hold it yourself, so you could take it on and off as you wanted it. I plan to use this with my next baby, no epi for me! Time seemed to fly by with the gas and air as well.

Gas made me feel horribly light headed and spacey - I didn't know what was going on. I took three breaths then threw it away...just use what works for you during your labour. I don't actually know what the gas is that is used.. you'd have to ask...

The gas they use is none other than good ol' laughing gas.. it's a mixture of laughing gas (nitrous oxide) and oxygen.
