Contractions Not Consistant Labor

I am 40 weeks and 3 days. We went to the hospital last night and my contractions were 2-4 min apart and very strong. I am 1 cent. and 70% thinned, and they sent me home, told me to come back when the pain got worse or they were closer together. Today they are very irregular and not as strong. What is going on? All the pain is in my low abdomen, if that means anything.
