dont worry we were all there - I know some people dont even know that they have shed their plug - its not like an actual plug more like a slimy thing that comes out (for me it felt like periods comming out) it can come out anytime from 2 weeks before but mine only did while I was in labour and as to what it is as I understand it is the thing that keeps baby safe during preg you know against infections etc.

does it mean if it comes out early the baby is not safe from infections ?

The mucus plug is in your cervix. It acts like a "cork", and when you start to dialate it can come out. For some, it "falls" out while they use the potty and they never see it. For others it ends up in their underwear. And then sometimes it doesn't come out at all until you are at the hospital and you are in labor. The amniotic sac is what keeps the baby safe from infection. The mucus plug protects the amniotic sac. You are fine if you lose your mucus plug. It looks like geletin/pudding and can be brownish or tinted with pink (blood). If you have real bleeding (red blood) you should call your doctor, just to be on the safe side(it's not time to panic).

I lost mine just yesterday, part of it came off on the toilet paper, and to make sure it was gone I felt my opening, and noticed there was still atleast half of it hanging on in there...(tmi I know), but mine didn't appear bloody at all, but it was more clear with white "specks" in it. It was also more stringy then it was a "plug". It can vary what it looks like depending on person to person. The only reason I know this was my mucus plug was that it looked exactly the same as my plug from last pregnancy, which my doctor happened to find when she did her 39 week cervix check.
