I'm now 39+4 and had my membranes stripped yesterday, the doctor said I was 3cm 80% efaced and the baby is at 0 station, I had alot of heavy bleeding and cramping after the procedure and today I feel fine. Is that a sign that it will not work?

I am 37/5 weeks - 2cm and about 70 - 80% effaced. The OB stripped my membranes today at 2pm and I have had some minor bleeding and very little cramping. I am pretty uncomfortable but I think we can all say that at this point! He said I probably wouldnt go into labor tonight but if it's going to work that it would be in the next 2 days. I am due Nov 3rd but would like her to come sooner rather than later. Very selfish aren't we =) I think she will come when she ready no matter what I do! Ugh I can't wait!!! First baby.....

i am 41 weeks, 2 cm dilated and my cervix is soft. i had my membranes stripped today and hope like heck it works!! my baby is already 8 lb 12 oz according to ultrasound. i have some bloody show, and contractions are beginning, although still irregular. midwife recommended using a b___st pump to stimulate oxytocin when my contractions regulate. she said 8 minutes each b___st. she also suggested s_x- s____n has an inducer of some sort to it. i'll be honest- the thought of s_x with cramping from the stripping doesn't sound appealing. i may get desperate though. also try 2 oz castor oil mixed with root beer, and a second round in 4 hours. its a laxative and diarreah is supposeed to irritate the uteris.

you should atleast let them try to strip your membranes and if it works good but if it doesnt within 2to3 days i wouldnt try again because baby might not be ready even though you are.

Could someone please tell me what it feels like when they strip your membranes. I am 39 weeks and we to the doctor's yesterday. They did an internal. I am 25% effaced. The doctor did something to me that killed. It felt like she was pulling on my cervix for a couple minutes. When the exam was over, I was spotting and have been since yesterday. I hear the doctors like to "speed things up" sometimes and I'm just wondering what she did. Anyway, I'm reading about this membrane stripping and how people are spotting & cramping up afterwards. Anyway, could someone explain to me what they do/how long it takes? Thanks!

I am 37 weeks and just had my membranes stripped. IT wasnt more uncomfortable then a regular exam...I got it done cause my baby is big and I have been stuck at 3 cm and 80 %. I would suggest doing it cause it has been a few hours and am already getting contractions to move things along..

I am five days late, for the longest time I was only one cm, then on week fourty, I got stripped and two days later I was four cm, so something worked. My contractions are still irregular, but I'm hopping I get to see my baby soon. so I think it does get something going.

My husband asked the Doctor what the odds were for membrane stripping jumpstarting real labor. Here is what he told us... If you are dialated between 1-2 cm it is about a 30% chance that it will start real labor. If you are dialated more then 3 cm it can be as good as a 70% chance that it will start labor. I've had mine stripped 2 weeks in a row- no labor yet- but I've been between 2-2.5 cm. He also said that if it doesn't jumpstart labor it can atleast help you to dialate so that maybe next week it would work better. Hope this helps.

I was 2 cm dialated and 80% effaced for about three weeks. At 39 weeks I asked my doctor to strip my membranes. He was reluctant at first, but did it any way. He stripped my membranes at noon(very painful, but only for a few seconds). About an hour later I had pms cramping and some brown blood. At 9:00 pm I started mild contractions, but was able to sleep. I woke at 3 am with horrible contractions and lost my plug at 5 am. We went right to the hospital and my water broke in the parking ramp of the hospital. I gave birth to my son at 11:28 am. I cannot say for sure if this happened because of the stripping of membranes, but it sure looks that way.

I am 39 weeks and 5 days, 1 cm dilated and had my membranes stripped yesterday. It did not hurt, just felt like a regular exam when they check you. I have been contracting for 5 days but they are not painful. Tonight I started having lots of those shooting pains in my v____a, I think it is caused from your cervix changing so hopefully something is going on.

I am 38 weeks pregnant and had my regular check up today. I also had my membranes stripped today. I truly hope this helps my labor progress as I have been in early labor for over 2 weeks (and had labor stopped once) I do feel a bit crampy. I found this membrane stripping to be very very painful as I was only 1CM dilated and my uterus is very tiped (they practically have to reach for gold to reach my cervix).
I also hope this jump starts my labor!

Hello, I am 40 wks and 2 days pregnant with my second child. My first one is 10 yrs old and she was actually 3 days early. My husband and I are so anxious to meet our son. Today I had my membranes stripped and yes it hurt something terrible. My doctor told me its a possibility I could go into labor in 24-48 hrs. I too have experienced the cramping and the contractions but like the others, the contractions are irregular. My doctor told me if I didn't go into labor they'd like to see me back on Friday to have NST and another ultrasound. If everything is okay and nothing happens between Friday and Monday, they would induce my labor on Monday. Question to anyone, would it be worth my while getting my membranes stripped once more on Friday?

jeanamari: I think it would be worth while having them stripped again. It is suppose to work in 50% of women so it would double your odds!
Stripping the membranes causes contractions so maybe on Friday it would start your natural labor process by giving it an extra boost!
I had to go back to the Dr. again today as I lost my Mucus Plugg and let me tell you its nasty! I am still only 1 CM dilated and this has been a long early labor. Dr said next monday as well we will discuss inducing to prevent too much stress on myself and the baby.
I wish you luck with everything. Also my Dr told me "S_x" will help it along as long as your water as not broken yet!

As painful as it was (stripping), I think I'll have it done again. I have been loosing my mucous plug for the last week. My sister who is a pediatric nurse, said you can lose it all at once or over a period of days...I know, it isn't the most attractive thing. I'm hoping something happens between now and Friday. We've tried just about everything (castor oil, walking, nipple stimulation, s_x and just recently the membrane stripping). My husband and I are beginning to get a little nervous. I sure hope he comes on his own.
Thank you Nikki, Congratulations and Good Luck!
